The ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year 2023 award has nominated Daryl Mitchell of New Zealand and players Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, and Mohammed Shami of India. No players from the World Cup-winning Australian team made the cut.
In 2023, Gill, who amassed 1584 runs at an average of 63.36 over 29 matches, became the youngest player to reach the 1000-run mark in the format after smashing a brilliant 208 against New Zealand in Hyderabad.
The list also included India’s hero, Virat Kohli, who scored 1377 runs the year before, 765 of which came in the ODI World Cup, when he won the title of player of the tournament. In 2023, the right-hander also made history as the first hitter to reach 500 runs in the format.
Shami, who claimed 24 wickets at an incredible average of 10.7 at the World Cup last year, was also well-deserved to be on the list.
Mitchell, a Kiwi batter, made the list as well after amassing an incredible 1204 runs in 22 games—the third-highest total by a New Zealand player in a calendar year in the format.
