Paul Smalley, the technical head of the Bangladesh Football Federation, won’t be with the women’s team when they play Nepal in a FIFA friendly in Dhaka.

This is unusual for the British national, who has been a regular part of the women’s team since he was hired in 2016.

The BFF’s technical director, who is 56 years old, has almost a year left on his contract. However, he is currently in talks with the BFF president about a big raise in salary and perks, which are currently worth about 16 lac taka per month according to the contract.

The Englishman just got back to Bangladesh after Eid holiday, but he hasn’t been involved with the women’s team. On July 13 and 16, the women’s team will play Nepal in two FIFA matches in Dhaka.

The BFF source also said that BFF’s technical head, Paul Smalley, who has been on women’s teams since he was hired, will not be on this new task because his contract is still being negotiated.

“Paul is talking with the head of the BFF. Since that’s still up in the air, he won’t be in these events. He also won’t give the team any orders until the talks are over, Mahfuza Akter Kiron, chair of the BFF women’s side, said at a press meeting on Wednesday at the BFF house.

Golam Rabbani Choton used to be the coach of different national women’s teams, but Smalley used to come up with the team’s strategies and even sit in the dugout, where she would often send messages to the players on the field. Since Choton quit, it was thought that Smalley would help Mahbubur Rahman Litu, who has been named head coach for these two games.

In a recent interview with The Daily Star, BFF president Kazi Salahuddin said that Smalley is much more important than Choton and that women’s football would not be able to grow as much without him.

But Smalley has recently stopped being involved in anything BFF does. Kiron told them that Smalley hasn’t talked to anyone on the team yet. The BFF source also said that Smalley has told fitness expert Ivan Razlog, who has worked with the women’s team in the past, not to work with the team this time.Paul Smalley, the technical head of the Bangladesh Football Federation, won’t be with the women’s team when they play Nepal in a FIFA friendly in Dhaka.
