Newcastle’s victory over Everton at Goodison Park brings them closer to qualifying for the Champions League after two decades, while Everton’s chances of staying in the Premier League are diminishing.
Although Eddie Howe’s team did not perform at their highest level, they were still able to easily defeat Everton with two goals from Callum Wilson, as well as goals from Joelinton and Jacob Murphy. This victory has given Newcastle a comfortable lead of eight points over Aston Villa, who are currently in fifth place, and they still have one more game to play.
Howe stated that the first half was not flawless, but the second half was exceptional as they managed to score some impressive goals.
Everton’s loss means they are still in the relegation zone and need to work hard to avoid being relegated from the English top flight after 69 years.
Everton has scored the least number of goals in the Premier League this season, and their failure to convert chances into goals cost them again in their latest match. Despite a promising beginning, they were unable to capitalize on their opportunities.
Everton’s manager, Sean Dyche, acknowledged that the game shifted in their opponent’s favor after they scored their second goal, and emphasized the importance of making changes to prevent this from happening again. He criticized his team’s weak response to the setback, despite still having a chance to turn the game around.
Newcastle surprised Tottenham by scoring five goals in the first 21 minutes of the game. However, they didn’t create many opportunities before taking the lead in the 28th minute. Wilson scored his fifth goal in six games after Pickford failed to save Joelinton’s shot properly.
If Dominic Calvert-Lewin had been healthy for most of the season, Everton may not be in such a difficult situation. Calvert-Lewin returned in a match against Crystal Palace and demonstrated his skills with a subtle shot that was narrowly disallowed for being offside.
Pickford redeemed himself by making a great save to prevent Newcastle from scoring a second goal. However, Everton’s defense fell apart once Joelinton scored a simple header from Willock’s cross. Wilson added a third goal by skillfully curling the ball into the top corner from outside the box.
Everton scored a lucky goal when Dwight McNeil’s corner fooled his former teammate Pope. But soon after, Alexander Isak came on as a substitute and easily outmaneuvered the Everton defense to set up Murphy for an easy goal. The score was now 4-1.
