Following Australia’s eight-wicket victory over Pakistan in the third Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground, the team’s most successful opener, David Warner, announced his retirement from Test cricket today.

Thousands of Australians were at the SCG to see Warner go to a roaring send-off after he scored 57 in his last Test innings.

Among the many who honored the opening was Usman Khawaja, Warner’s longtime national teammate who has played with the left-hander since their school days.

Following the game, Khawaja’s mother, who was at the stadium, gave Warner a hug; the photo of them together has since gone popular on social media.

Later, Khawaja disclosed the close relationship between their families, stating that his mother refers to Warner as “Shaytan.”

“My mother is giving Warner a big hug; she adores him.” To be honest, I simply liked batting alongside him; he attacked the ball, and I was able to play my game,” Khawaja said.

“My mother adores him. He goes by Shaytan. Satan is the Devil. The fact that he was the villain pleased my mother. Furthermore, she couldn’t simply turn it around and give it back to Lorraine and Howard (Warner’s parents).”

With 8786 runs at the conclusion of his Test career, Warner ranks seventh all-time in Australia’s Test run totals.
