Maxime lopez fires fiorentina into coppa italia semis0

Tuesday, Fiorentina’s Coppa Italia semi-final match against Bologna, Serie A opponents, ended goalless after extra time, setting up a 5-4 penalty shootout victory.

Maxime Lopez of Fiorentina converted after Bologna defender Stefan Posch missed their fifth penalty attempt, sending the previous year’s finalists through.

Despite having more possession, Bologna—who eliminated champion Inter Milan in the round of 16—was unable to break the tie.

The visitors had a chance in the 34th minute when winger Riccardo Orsolini struck the post after the interval and striker Joshua Zirkzee punched the bar from close range.

However, Fiorentina, which now sits fourth in Serie A with 33 points, one point ahead of Bologna in fifth place, played solid defense on route to making it to the semi-finals for the first time in three years.

They will next play in a two-leg semi-final in April against the victor of Wednesday’s encounter between AC Milan and Atalanta.

In the other quarterfinal, Lazio hosts AS Roma in a rivalry match on Wednesday, while Juventus plays Frosinone at home on Thursday.
