Overmars banned from world football over inappropriate behaviour0

Due to his unacceptable behavior against women at Ajax Amsterdam, former Netherlands international Marc Overmars will not be permitted to occupy any job in professional football for at least a year, according to a Tuesday article in the Dutch daily NRC.

Overmars was suspended in the Netherlands late last year; FIFA, the international football organization, claimed to have taken over the punishment, according to the NRC.

In February 2022, Overmars resigned from his position at Ajax, acknowledging that he had engaged in “unacceptable” behavior after revelations inside the organization that he had sent offensive texts and images to many female employees.

Overmars was barred from all positions in Dutch football for two years, with a one-year suspension, after the occurrences by an independent sports tribunal last year.

Then, the Dutch Football Association (KNVB) requested that FIFA extend the local punishment worldwide.

Overmars joined Belgian team Royal Antwerp as technical director soon after abruptly leaving Ajax.

When contacted on Tuesday for comment, FIFA and the KNVB did not immediately react.

The former winger for Barcelona, Arsenal, and the Netherlands was notified of the ban, but an Overmars representative told NRC that he was not yet prepared to speak.

FIFA’s punishment might be challenged by Overmars, the newspaper said.
