The English Premier League giants Manchester United finished their North American trip with a 3-2 loss to the Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund in Las Vegas on Sunday. The loss came as a result of Borussia Dortmund capitalizing on Manchester United’s defensive blunders.
Youssoufa Moukoko, who came in as a substitute for Dortmund and scored in the second half, proved to be the game-winner in an exciting match that took place at Allegiant Stadium, which is the home of the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders.
Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, and Mason Mount, who had just signed with the club, were among the players that United manager Erik ten Hag decided to put on the bench instead of in the starting lineup.
However, Manchester United’s impromptu starting eleven were more than a match for Borussia Dortmund in the first half. They dominated for lengthy stretches of the game until Diogo Dalot gave the Red Devils the lead with a goal from a distance 24 minutes into the match.
Donyell Malen, a striker who represents the Netherlands internationally, scored two goals in one minute for Dortmund as the first half came to a close, which completely changed the complexion of the game.
The first goal was scored because United’s defense was unable to stop Karim Adeyemi’s run down the right side of the field.
Adeyemi was able to successfully set up Malen for a close-range finish despite the fact that a number of United defenders were focusing their attention on him.
A minute later, Malen scored his second goal, capitalizing on a mistake made by United. Victor Lindelof was attempting to send the ball out of the back of the area when he lost control of the ball inside the area.
Another defensive lapse, this time committed by Harry Maguire, gave Sebastien Haller the opportunity to take a shot on goal, and United were very fortunate not to be down by a score of 3-1 in the opening minutes of the second half.
Andre Onana, the goalie for United, made a save, and then he watched in relief as Adeyemi blasted the follow-up shot wide of the goal with the hole wide open.
United did go back on level terms in the 52nd minute when Brazilian striker Antony scored a goal with a low drive from inside the box after Dortmund veteran Mats Hummels failed to clear the ball properly.
When there was still half an hour to go, Ten Hag made several substitutions, and Rashford was one of the players who immediately provided a greater offensive threat.
But it was Borussia Dortmund that scored the game-winning goal, with veteran Marco Reus creating a deft opportunity that Moukoko capitalized on to score the game-winning goal.
