According to comments made by FIFA President Gianni Infantino to Reuters on Thursday, Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. will serve as the head of a special anti-racism committee that will be made up of players and will recommend harsher sanctions for discriminatory behavior in football.
When Real Madrid and Valencia faced each other in May, Brazil striker Vinicius was subjected to racist abuse by supporters of both teams. This was the tenth such incident involving the 22-year-old that LaLiga had referred to prosecutors this season.
“There will be no more football games that have racist elements. When anything like this occurs, there should be an instant halt to the games. “Enough is enough,” Infantino said on Thursday after meeting Vinicius and the Brazil national team, who will face Guinea in Barcelona on Saturday as part of an anti-racism campaign coordinated by the Brazilian FA (CBF). “Enough is enough,” Infantino said after meeting Vinicius and the Brazil national team.
“I invited Vinicius to take the helm of this group of players that would propose more stringent consequences for racist behavior, which will eventually be adopted by all football governing bodies across the globe.
“We need to hear what the players need in order to work in a safer environment, and we need to hear it from them.” We are taking this matter very seriously.
“We need to have stricter penalties. Racism of any kind has no place in football going forward. As president of FIFA, I felt it was necessary for me to have a personal conversation about it with Vinicius.
