Bangladesh are in prime position to win the lone Test against Afghanistan by a large margin despite a batting wobble at the beginning of the second day.

The visitors were swept out for a paltry 146 in 39 overs.

The Tigers have a commanding 370-run lead as play for the third day resumes with them at 134 for one in their second innings.

The Tigers scored 362 for 5 at the end of the first day, but could only add 20 more runs before the end of the day. Mushfiqur Rahim and Mehedi Hasan Miraz both fell short of 50 runs, while Nijat Masood, an Afghan seamer, took three wickets on his debut to finish with a five-wicket haul.

Afghanistan’s batter responded, but they were unable to build on the momentum established by Masood and company. Afghanistan hitters had a hard time dealing with the bounce and spin off the pitch at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, with the exception of a 65-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Nasir Jamal and stumper-batter Afsar Zazai.

Ebadot Hossain and Shoriful Islam, both fast bowlers, split six wickets; Hossain took four for the third time in his Test career.

Meanwhile, both Taijul Islam and Miraz took two wickets each, with Miraz becoming just the third Bangladesh bowler in history, behind Shakib Al Hasan and Taijul, to reach 150 wickets in the longest version of the game.

Tigers’ captain Liton Das decided not to call follow on, thus play started in much the same way as on day one.

Although Afghanistan’s Amir Hamza was able to get rid of Mahmudul Hasan Joy early in the second over, first innings centurion Najmul Hossain Shanto and Zakir Hasan established themselves with a partnership of 100+ runs.

With the opportunity to dismiss Zakir and Shanto early in their innings, the visitors instead committed nine extras in the second innings, adding to the 32 they committed in the first.
