Tottenham Hotspur has fired their interim coach Cristian Stellini following their humiliating 6-1 defeat against Newcastle United, which has put the club’s chances of finishing in the top four of the Premier League at risk.

The assistant coach, Ryan Mason, will become the head coach immediately as the club searches for a new permanent manager and director of football, following Fabio Paratici’s resignation earlier this month.

Stellini took over as manager of Tottenham Hotspur after Antonio Conte was replaced last month. With Spurs currently in fourth place, their recent loss to Newcastle United at St James’ Park puts them six points behind Newcastle and Manchester United, despite having played more games.

The chairman of the club, Daniel Levy, expressed his disappointment and shock regarding Sunday’s performance against Newcastle, stating that it was completely unacceptable.

There are numerous reasons why it occurred and although everyone involved must take responsibility, it ultimately falls on me as the leader.

Cristian helped us during a tough part of the season and we appreciate how he and his coaching team handled everything in a professional way.

Mason has become interim coach for the second time after taking over when the club fired Jose Mourinho in April 2021.

Stellini was a part of Conte’s management team and took over as the team’s leader temporarily when Conte was unable to attend certain games because of his gallbladder surgery.

Stellini took over for Conte and led Spurs to victories against Manchester City, West Ham United, and Chelsea.

Despite his previous success, the new coach was not able to replicate it and has only won one game with Tottenham against Brighton & Hove Albion. Additionally, Bournemouth recently won against Tottenham with a last-minute score of 3-2.

Julian Nagelsmann, a former coach of Bayern Munich, is the top choice of bookmakers for the Tottenham job. Additionally, Vincent Kompany, who has led Burnley to the Premier League this season, is also being considered.

The job has been associated with Feyenoord’s Arne Slot and ex-Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers.

The British media have stated that Mauricio Pochettino, who previously managed Spurs and took them to the Champions League final in 2019, is currently in discussions to become the new manager of Chelsea, a rival team in London.

On Thursday, Manchester United will visit Spurs for their next match.
