The Cricket South Africa (CSA) has named opener Laura Wolvaardt the captain of all three formats ahead of Bangladesh’s tour of South Africa.
During the Pakistan against New Zealand series, Laura led the team in an acting capacity.
In all three formats, the 24-year-old will be the Proteas’ leader. According to the ICC, her first task as the team’s full-time captain will be to lead them in the home T20I and ODI series against Bangladesh from December 3–23.
Early on Saturday morning, the Bangladeshi squad is scheduled to board a plane for their trip of South Africa.
During her brief time as interim captain, Wolvaardt led her team to consecutive series victories against Pakistan and New Zealand, showing promise at the bat as well.
“Due to injuries and those returning from the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), a handful of our senior players will not be available for the T20 portion of the Bangladesh Tour. Especially in light of recent injuries, we are thrilled to give our extended identifiable group a chance.
“This gives us a comprehensive examination of players for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in Bangladesh next year,” the ICC quoted Clinton du Preez, the women convenor of selectors from South Africa, as saying.
The goal of South Africa Women’s head coach Hilton Moreeng was to build on the previous success.
“In our opinion, it’s important to carry on the excellent job that has already been done. We are aware that Bangladesh, our opponent, recently completed an extremely fruitful trip of Pakistan.
“For the T20Is, this is where we are going to look, where possible, to blend in youngsters and give an opportunity to expose them at this level to keep growing the base,” added the coach. Overall, we have a lot of talented young players developing, and the team is getting stronger every day in a more demanding atmosphere, so we’re excited about that as a unit.
“It’s another opportunity for some of these youngsters to show what they can do while not losing sight of what we want to achieve overall when it comes to the entire tour.”
