Soumya under team management’s ‘observation’

Soumya under team management's 'observation'0

Nic Pothas, an assistant coach for Bangladesh’s national cricket team, revealed that Soumya Sarkar is now being monitored by the team management staff.

This is due to the fact that the left-handed batter is working toward making a comeback to the national squad.

In addition to Soumya, a few other players who are not currently part of the Bangladesh squad have been invited to the national camp that is taking place at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. This is so that the team management can have a better look at them.

The last time Soumya wore the Bangladesh shirt was during the Twenty20 World Cup match between Bangladesh and Pakistan in Adelaide in 2022. The player, who was 30 years old at the time, was cut from the team after a poor performance in the World Cup.

When Pothas was asked whether Soumya, who made his debut in 2014 during head coach Chandika Hathurusingha’s first stint with the national team, seemed to be at his best during the training, he said that it was still too early to provide an opinion on him. Soumya made his debut in 2014 during the first stint that head coach Chandika Hathurusingha had with the national team.

“I am not sure. Only on television from a very long time ago have I ever seen him perform at his peak. For the time being, we are in a phase of observation. Because we are confident in his abilities, we want him to loosen up and enjoy himself while playing. However, I have only seen him at the net three times when there was no pressure involved. That’s really too little time to form an opinion on someone like him. Therefore, I need to make the effort to watch him carefully,” Pothas said.

In the past, Bangladesh has tried Soumya out in a variety of spots in the batting order to see how he performs. On the other hand, Pothas said that they have not yet made a decision on the role for which they are considering Soumya.

It is clear that he has previously batted at the top spot in the order. On the other hand, this is a discussion with the head coach that we have not yet had. At this point, we have only entered the first stages of the observation phase.

“I believe that he will be given opportunity to travel with up-and-coming players in order to play again. However, runs are the money that batters trade in. It does not matter what you look like or what we believe someone is capable of doing; all that matters is that you get inside the system. However, the thing that puts you on the squad is your ability to run,” Pothas said.
