Sevilla were eliminated from the Champions League on Wednesday after blowing a two-goal lead in a 3-2 loss to PSV Eindhoven.
Following goals from Sergio Ramos and Youssef En-Nesyri, Sevilla winger Lucas Ocampos was sent off for two bookings in four minutes, allowing PSV to mount a comeback.
Ismael Saibari volleyed home for the visitors, and then Nemanja Gudelj bundled into his own net, as the Dutch side hushed Sevilla’s Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan stadium.
Ricardo Pepi of the United States scored in stoppage time to eliminate Sevilla’s hopes of reaching the last 16.
PSV’s victory moves them into second place, one point behind Group B leaders Arsenal, who play Lens later Wednesday.
Seven-time Europa League champions If Arsenal defeats Lens and Sevilla defeats Lens in the last group match, Sevilla may still qualify for that competition.
Sevilla have not won a single game in the Champions League or La Liga under coach Diego Alonso, with four defeats and four draws since he took over in October.
Sevilla’s night had started off so well.
Ramos began his 141st Champions League encounter, tying Manchester United veteran Ryan Giggs for sixth all-time.
The veteran centre-back, 37, celebrated by scoring from close range after Ivan Rakitic’s free-kick found its way through to him at the back post.
It was Ramos’ first goal for Sevilla since returning from Paris Saint-Germain this summer.
The lead was just reward for Sevilla’s excellent start, and they continued to control the game, with Djibril Sow scoring a second goal, but it was disallowed for a handball early in the move.
Before halftime, En-Nesyri headed against the crossbar as Alonso’s team played with a confidence not seen in recent weeks.
After racing on to Marcos Acuna’s long ball, the Moroccan striker scored Sevilla’s second goal early in the second half with a nice flicked finish over custodian Walter Benitez.
Sevilla were leading, but winger Ocampos was booked twice in four minutes, the second for colliding with Yorbe Vertessen, giving PSV hope.
Saibari hauled them back into the game two minutes later with a superb volley from Sergino Dest’s cross, putting the hosts on the ropes.
Gudelj awkwardly turned Vertessen’s cross into his own net, leaving the hosts clutching on for a point as the clock ticked down.
They couldn’t even make that claim, as 20-year-old striker Pepi’s header from Vertessen’s cross sealed their fate.
