All-rounder Rumana Ahmed of the national women’s team made a stir when she wrote “no more cricket” on social media. Word spread quickly that she was going to quit, and she also told a few news outlets that she didn’t want to do cricket anymore.
The women’s wing of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) asked the all-rounder to come to a meeting at BCB headquarters yesterday to explain what she had done.
Rumana, who is 32 years old and has played for Bangladesh in 50 ODIs and 84 T20Is, was upset when she was left out of the 26-person preliminary team for the Asian Games.
Shafiul Alam Chowdhury Nadel, who is in charge of the women’s wing committee, and selection Sajjad Ahmed Shipon asked Rumana to explain what she had done in the meeting.
Nadel told The Daily Star yesterday, “She is an experienced player, and we have told her to keep in touch with her coaches and trainers.”
“It wasn’t like she was being told she was breaking the rules or anything,” he said.
Rumana was upset that she couldn’t go to the camp in question. She was told not to give up on her work and to keep going with it.
“We’ve given her advice on different things and told her to get in touch with us if she needs something or doesn’t understand something.”
“The truth is, she isn’t being left out of everything. There are a number of players in the team who are in similar situations. At the moment, the other leaders are also working hard. We told her that she would have access to a practice facility in Mirpur and, if she needed them, teachers and trainers separately,” said the women’s wing head.
