Cristiano Ronaldo, the leader of Portugal, has passed Lionel Messi to set a new world record for the most money an athlete makes in a year.
This is his 17th Guinness World Records title.
The 38-year-old is thought to have made a huge £107.5 million in the year running up to May 1, 2023. For the first time since 2017, he is at the top of Forbes’ list of the world’s highest-paid sports. But Ronaldo was at the top of Forbes’ list of the world’s highest-paid players for the third time.
He took the title from Messi, who made an estimated £103 million while still playing for Paris Saint-Germain and was the highest-paid player of 2022.
The record-breaking income of the Al Nassr hero comes from £35 million in on-field wages and £68.5 million from advertising.
On-field earnings include wages, award money, and bonuses. Off-field earnings include business deals, performance fees, merchandise sales, and income from licenses.
Forbes figures out how much players make by using information from industry sources, news stories, and pay records.
Ronaldo broke the Guinness World Record for the most games played by a man player last month when he played his 200th game for Portugal against Iceland. Ronaldo scored the game-winning goal in the last minute to mark the big game.
