The country’s cricket body said on Wednesday that Rahul Dravid’s contract, which had expired with the 50-overs home World Cup earlier this month, has been extended.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) did not specify the length of the extension, although it is expected to span the June T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the United States.
“The BCCI engaged in productive discussions with Rahul Dravid after the term of his contract ended … and unanimously agreed to further the tenure,” according to a statement issued by the board.
The BCCI praised Dravid’s “exceptional professionalism” as coach of the team that reached the World Test Championship and ODI World Cup finals this year, only to lose to Australia on both occasions.
The board also commended former test batsman VVS Laxman, who was expected to succeed Dravid in the post after filling in for his old India teammate on occasion, saying he had provided “exemplary” service.
Dravid had transformed India into a “formidable” power, according to BCCI secretary Jay Shah.
“Team India is now a formidable unit across formats, and our top ranking in all three formats directly reflects his vision, guidance, and the roadmap he charted for the team,” he went on to say.
“Having won 10 consecutive games before the final, our World Cup campaign was nothing short of extraordinary, and the head coach deserves appreciation for setting up the right platform for the team to flourish.”
Dravid stated that he has truly enjoyed his two years as coach.
“I’m genuinely proud of the culture we’ve established in the locker room,” the 50-year-old remarked.
“I thank the BCCI and the office bearers for placing their trust in me, endorsing my vision, and providing support during this period.”
“As we embrace new challenges post the World Cup, we remain committed to the pursuit of excellence.”
Laxman is currently leading a second-string India squad against Australia in a five-match T20 series. Dravid is expected to resume the coaching reins for India’s upcoming trip to South Africa.
