The allegations of corruption involving government funds against several executives of the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) were sustained by the Supreme Court on Sunday, upholding a High Court ruling asking the relevant agencies to start investigation.
The Appellate Division of the SC upheld its chamber judge’s judgment that issued status quo on a part of the HC instruction that asked them to investigate the claims relating FIFA fund on June 25.
Attorney for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Khurshid Alam Khan told The Daily Star that the Supreme Court had also requested that the HC dispose of the rule issued over this matter within three weeks.
Senior vice president and financial committee chairman Abdus Salam Murshedy of the BFF filed a leave to appeal petition against the HC ruling, and a full bench of the Appellate Division presided by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique issued the order.
On May 15th, the HC ordered the ACC, the Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), the Bangladesh Bank, the National Board of Revenue, and the Youth and Sports ministry to investigate allegations of corruption, money laundering, and embezzlement against the officials concerned of the BFF and to present their findings to the court within four months.
The HC also issued a ruling demanding an explanation from the respondents as to why they should not be held in contempt for failing to investigate these accusations.
After a writ petition was filed asking the HC to direct the ACC to investigate the corruption claim, the bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Khizir Hayat Lizu issued the order and ruling.
