Phillips seen applying saliva on ball, receives no penalty0

Glenn Phillips of New Zealand was seen using his saliva to shine the ball during the third day of the first Test between Bangladesh and New Zealand in Sylhet, however he received no penalty for his actions.

Phillips was bowling to Najmul Hossain Shanto in the 34th over of Bangladesh’s innings when the event occurred, with Mominul Haque at the non-striker’s end.

Before delivering the ball, the off-spinner was seen on television applying saliva to the ball twice, which is a violation of Law 41.3 of the game, which prohibits the use of saliva on cricket balls as of October 1, 2022.

The fielding team could be penalised five runs if they violate this rule, according to the on-field umpires. However, the match’s on-field umpires, Ahsan Raza and Paul Reiffel, appear to have missed the incident because no action was taken.

Mominul, who finished with 40, told reporters after the match that he, too, did not see it happen.

Bangladesh team manager Nafees Iqbal stated that he alerted the fourth umpire about the event on behalf of the squad.

Bangladesh finished the day with a score of 212-3, a 205-run lead.
