The coach of AS Roma, Joss Mourinho, has abruptly resigned from his position on the UEFA Football Board. This judgment comes only one day after the European Football Association handed down a suspension against him, barring him from participating in four European matches due to his inappropriate behavior against referee Anthony Taylor.
Mourinho said in a letter to UEFA director and former AC Milan chairman Zvonimir Boban, “I thank you for the invitation to join the UEFA Football Board, but I regret to inform you that I will be relinquishing my involvement with immediate effect.” Mourinho was responding to Boban’s request to join the UEFA Football Board.
The UEFA Football Board is comprised of retired football players and coaches who get together to discuss ways in which the sport might be improved.
“The conditions that I believed in so deeply when I joined no longer apply,” Mourinho stated. “When I joined, I believed so strongly in them.” Therefore, I believe it is necessary for me to make this choice. I respectfully request that you communicate my decision to President Aleksander Ceferin.
After the team’s loss in the Europa League final against Sevilla at the end of May, Mourinho became extremely angry at Taylor. In the parking lot of the Puskas Arena in Budapest, the Portuguese trainer was heard yelling various things to his Hungarian opponent, including “You are a disgrace.”
Mourinho said that the British referee was trying to undermine his squad by using his whistle. After that, Taylor and his family were assaulted by supporters of AS Roma when they were at the Budapest airport.
