Lionel Messi, the leader of the Argentina team that won the World Cup, says he has no idea when he will stop playing for his country.
“Not even I know when. “It’ll happen when it happens,” the 36-year-old said in an interview that aired Wednesday on Argentine TV.
The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner said, “After winning everything, I just want to enjoy the moment and let time tell me when it’s time.”
“Given my age, it seems likely that it will happen soon, but I’m not sure.
“Now that we’re world champions and American champions (Argentina won the 2021 Copa America), we need to enjoy it.”
He said again what he had said before, which was that he probably wouldn’t be on Argentina’s team when they try to protect their World Cup title in 2026.
Last month, the interview took place in China, where Messi scored the fastest goal of his career in a 2-0 friendly win against Australia in Beijing. It took him only 79 seconds to score.
Messi moved from Paris Saint-Germain to Inter Miami, a team in the US Major League Soccer, on Tuesday. He went to Florida to finish the move.
He is set to sign a two-and-a-half-year contract, which is said to be worth $60 million a year, before fans on Sunday at a stadium event.
