A few weeks before the commencement of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, star Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is dealing with a new ailment after injuring his ankle during a training session in Durban.

Prior to Australia’s T20I series against South Africa on Wednesday, Maxwell exacerbated his ankle while practicing. He will now go home to be with his wife as they wait for the arrival of their first child.

Maxwell is anticipated to heal from the ankle issue in time for Australia’s World Cup campaign, but national selector Tony Dodemaide said that given the 34-year-old’s injury history, which includes the bizarre leg injury he sustained at a friend’s party late last year, no chances will be taken with him.

Maxwell will likely don the Australian uniform once again for Australia’s ODI series against India at the end of the next month, and Dodemaide is optimistic he will be totally healthy for the World Cup.

In order for Glenn to be available for the three-match ODI series in India leading up to the World Cup, his recuperation will be watched carefully.
Maxwell’s absence gives Matthew Wade the chance to reclaim his spot in Australia’s lineup. The veteran has been called up for the series against South Africa and might provide Josh Inglis and other wicketkeepers another alternative.

Maxwell has joined a list of up to seven first-choice players who will not be participating in Australia’s T20I tour of South Africa, including Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Cameron Green, and David Warner.

South Africa and Australia will face off in their first game on Wednesday in Dubai.

Mitchell Marsh (captain), Sean Abbott, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Aaron Hardie, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Spencer Johnson, Matt Short, Marcus Stoinis, Ashton Turner, Matthew Wade, and Adam Zampa make up Australia’s T20 team to take on South Africa.
