The Indian cricket board (BCCI) announced on Monday that Ishan Kishan will take the position of the injured KL Rahul in India’s roster for the World Test Championship (WTC) final match against Australia that will take place the following month.
As a result of ripping a tendon in his right leg while playing for the Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Rahul will not be able to participate in the remainder of the IPL season or in the WTC final.
“After consultations with specialists, it has been decided that Rahul will undergo surgery at the earliest possible opportunity, followed by rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy for the same,” the BCCI said in a statement.
Ishan Kishan has been chosen to succeed KL Rahul as the senior captain of India by the All-India Senior Selection Committee.Kishan, who has played for India in shorter forms, was included in the test squad for the first two games of a four-match series against Australia in February. However, he has not yet made his debut for India in the longest format, and he was selected for those first two games of the series.
As a result of injuries sustained in recent weeks, both Jaydev Unadkat and Umesh Yadav, who are both members of the team that will compete in the WTC final, are undergoing medical monitoring, according to the BCCI.
The Oval will be the location for the WTC final from June 7-11 this year. In June 2021, the first World T20 Championship was held, and India made it all the way to the final, although they ended up losing to New Zealand by eight wickets in a match that was played in Southampton.
India squad: Rohit Sharma (captain), Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Ishan Kishan, KS Bharat (wicketkeeper), Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat.
