Girona, the leaders of La Liga, must prove they deserve to be considered title contenders with Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid, according to coach Michel, following Monday’s victory over Alaves.
Girona’s 3-0 victory at home shot them back to the top of the rankings with 44 points from 17 games, two above Real Madrid in second place and nine ahead of Barcelona, whom Girona had already beaten this month.
“Madrid will contend with the league. Barcelona will contend for the league. “Atletico will compete for the league,” Michel informed the media.
“We have to earn that right… (and) end the year in the best way.”
Girona has extended their league unbeaten streak to 11 games and has been the season’s surprise package.
“I expected a much tougher game, much more complicated with transitions from the opponent but we didn’t let them do it at any time,” added the Spaniard.
“The reality is that we are in good shape and we have had an incredible first half of the season.”
On Thursday, Girona will play their final 2023 match away to Real Betis.
“Trying to win at Real Betis’ field, which is a beautiful game to play with a spectacular atmosphere and with the maximum difficulty because it is also a team that will be fighting in Europe,” Michel stated.
Girona is hopeful that they will at least create history this season because their best La Liga finish is tenth.
“We must savor the now while there is still more to come. We must acknowledge that these players are creating history game by game,” he continued.
