On May 15, 2023, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the Gujarat Titans’ Shubman Gill plays a shot during a Twenty20 cricket match that is part of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The match is being played between the Gujarat Titans and the Sunrisers Hyderabad.
On Monday, India opener Shubman Gill blasted his first International Premier League century, helping the defending champions Gujarat Titans clinch a spot in the play-offs with a resounding 34-run victory against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
In Ahmedabad, Gill, who scored 101 runs off of 58 balls, and Sai Sudarshan, who scored 47, combined for a 147-run partnership to lead table-toppers Gujarat to an overall score of 188-9.
Gujarat were the first side to win one of the four play-off berths after limiting Hyderabad to 154-9 with to the combined efforts of Mohammed Shami and Mohit Sharma, who each took four wickets.
The team from Gujarat, who had a dream first season by winning the championship in their first year of competition, is also certain to place in the top two of their group. As a result of Hyderabad’s elimination from the play-off race, there are now seven teams competing for three spots in the play-offs. The 2016 champions were Hyderabad.
Wriddhiman Saha was out without scoring on the third ball of the encounter for Gujarat, but Gill smashed Fazalhaq Farooqi for four consecutive boundaries to set the tone for the contest.
Both Gill and Sudarshan were extremely destructive throughout their respective stays of 36 balls each. Gill moved up to second place in the batting rankings with 576 runs, trailing only the captain of the Bangalore team, Faf du Plessis, who had 631 runs.
In response, Hyderabad took wickets, and despite Gill’s century scored off of 56 balls, Gujarat was only able to score 34 runs in the final five overs of the game while losing seven wickets.
Bowlers performed well to limit Gujarat’s score, which appeared like it was going to go over 200, with seam bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar returning figures of 5-30; nevertheless, their efforts were in vain.
After falling to 12-3 with Shami getting two wickets, Hyderabad were never in the hunt for the win and ultimately lost by a score of 59-7.
Heinrich Klaasen of South Africa then scored 64 runs and put on 68 runs with Kumar, who scored 27, but the stand only decreased their margin of loss. Kumar scored 27 runs.
