Sri Lanka came back from being 54-4 before lunch to be 185-5 at tea on the first day of the first Test against Pakistan on Sunday.

Dhananjaya de Silva and Angelo Mathews each scored 50 runs.

De Silva (74 not out) and Mathews (64 not out) batted together for 131 runs before Pakistani leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed broke the stand and Galle judges called tea.

Pakistan’s top runner Shaheen Shah Afridi got three wickets on the first day of play, which was slowed down by rain.

Mathews, who was playing in his 105th Test, hit his 39th half-century in a five-day match, and de Silva hit a six to finish his fifty.

But Abrar got the former captain Mathews caught behind when the pair looked comfortable and de Silva was starting to hit the bowlers for fours.

Sri Lanka was in trouble at lunch, which was delayed by an hour because the length of the three classes had to be changed to make up for the nearly 90-minute rain delay.

Shaheen, a left-handed quick bowler playing his 26th Test, went from 99 to 100 wickets when he sent back Nishan Madushka caught behind for four in his second over after coming back from an injury.

A year ago, the 23-year-old Pakistani star hurt his knee at the same place.

Rain soon stopped play in Galle, but when it did, Shaheen took another wicket by getting Kusal Mendis out for 12.

Dimuth Karunaratne, the team’s captain, came back with a few fours, but Shaheen got him out for 29 when he tried to look down the leg side and was caught behind.

Soon after, fast bowler Naseem Shah came in. He quickly threw a ball that got Dinesh Chandimal out for one, and captain Babar Azam made a tough catch at third slip.
