Chandika Hathurusingha was reappointed as the head coach of Bangladesh earlier this year and immediately began to focus on promoting a more aggressive attitude within the team.
The cricketers finished their training camp in Sylhet before their ODI series against Ireland in England, and the coach focused on improving the batters’ attacking skills. In recent white-ball series, the batters have shown more aggression and confidence in their play.
Hathurusingha emphasized the importance of positivity, which was evident in Bangladesh’s two consecutive games against Ireland where they scored nearly 350 runs each time.
Bangladesh has struggled with utilizing the Powerplay in ODI cricket, as evidenced during the T20I series against England. They have only managed to see out the Powerplay without losing a wicket in one out of their last 10 ODIs, when they successfully chased down a 102-run target against Ireland without losing any wickets.
The 54-year-old person fixed the problem with the Tigers’ batting by instructing the openers to use the Powerplay effectively.
Hathurusingha stated that it is important for batters to play according to their batting position, such as openers batting in the first 10 overs. The team should strategize how to take advantage of fielding restrictions during different parts of the game. The number of batters dismissed can vary. Hathurusingha made these comments during a press conference in Sylhet.
Starting off correctly is crucial to avoid getting stuck later on. It’s essential for batters to have a clear plan, regardless of the circumstances.
The middle-order of Bangladesh’s cricket team has been performing consistently well, led by players like Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Najmul Hossain Shanto, and newcomer Towhid Hridoy, who have shown a positive attitude. However, Hathurusingha did not want to completely change their mindset, but rather provide them with more freedom.
The Sri Lankan believes that a positive attitude is important in all aspects of the game, not just in batting with an attacking mindset.
The approach should always be to play cricket positively and aggressively, but that doesn’t mean hitting every ball out of the stadium. The coach constantly reminds the players that being aggressive requires a positive mindset and decisive decision-making, such as team selection, field placements, and changing the bowling. The coach believes in giving the players the freedom to express themselves on the field.
The Tigers are scheduled to go to England for a three-game ODI series on May 1.
