Brentford defeated Chelsea 2-0 in the Premier League, causing Chelsea to suffer their fifth consecutive loss under interim coach Frank Lampard. The goals were an own goal by Chelsea’s captain Cesar Azpilicueta and a second-half strike by Bryan Mbeumo.
Chelsea’s recent defeat has left them without a chance of winning and placed them at the 11th position in the Premier League table. They are facing a possible worst season since 1993/94 despite the significant amount of money invested by their new American owners in buying players.
Brentford scored first through a corner kick header by Mathias Jorgensen that hit Azpilicueta and went in, even though the visitors had not yet had a shot on target.
Lampard is Chelsea’s third coach this season, following the dismissals of Tuchel and Potter. He made two substitutions at halftime, Mudryk and Aubameyang, in an attempt to end the team’s goal drought. Chelsea has only scored one goal in their past seven games across all competitions.
Substitute Mbeumo taught the Blues how to score in the 78th minute as he came in from the right and his powerful shot was redirected past Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Brentford won three points in their recent match, moving them up to ninth in the league. They are now eight points ahead of their wealthy neighbors from west London, who are reportedly hoping for this season to end soon. Rumors suggest that Chelsea may hire Mauricio Pochettino as their coach for next season.
