As Australia’s players came back from India on Wednesday, captain Pat Cummins said that his team had made their own history by winning the country’s record-setting sixth one-day World Cup.
Cummins’ team beat the hosts by six wickets in the final on Sunday in Ahmedabad. This was just a few months after they beat the south Asians to win their first World Test Championship.
The captain of Australia’s team arrived in Sydney with his teammates and was still full of joy over their win.
He told reporters at the airport, “Every half hour or so, you kind of remember that we just won the World Cup and get excited all over again.”
“So we’re still excited. The last two days have been great, and I think we’ll be happy for a while.”
Cummins also said, “I think they have made their own legacy.”
“You only get one chance every four years to play in the World Cup, and it’s hard to play a team like India.”
“So to be put up against the rest of the world and come away with a medal, that’s — it doesn’t get any better than that.”
Australia had to work their way back into the event after losing their first two games to India and South Africa. However, once they got to the semi-finals, they were unstoppable.
Even though they had a rough start, Cummins said the team had never doubted itself.
“You look back on now that we’ve won and you think: ‘Wow, everything came together,'” he said.
“But the faith never went away, not even at the beginning. We knew we hadn’t played our best, but we thought that once we got going, we could beat anyone.
