According to a source at the Brazilian Football Federation who spoke to AFP on Tuesday, Carlo Ancelotti, an Italian coach now employed by Real Madrid, will take over as head coach of Brazil’s national side in time for the 2024 Copa America.

The federation had said previously that Fernando Diniz, who plays for Fluminense, would take command of the squad while it searched for a permanent head coach.

Ancelotti has one more season left on his contract with Real Madrid, and he is scheduled to take over as Brazil’s manager in time for the Copa America, which will be hosted in the United States beginning in June 2024.

The man who coached before at AC Milan and Chelsea will make history by becoming the first non-Brazilian to take charge of the national team in over sixty years.

The Argentine Filpo Nunez was Brazil’s last coach from outside of South America. He was in charge for only one game in 1965.

The 64-year-old Ancelotti has had a lot of success in his career, including winning the Champions League twice, once with AC Milan and once with Real Madrid.

Tite was Brazil’s coach during the 2018 World Cup, however he resigned after the team was eliminated by Croatia in the quarterfinals. Brazil had been led by Tite until this point in the tournament.

Since then, Ramon Menezes has been serving in an interim capacity as the team’s head coach.

Earlier, the CBF had published a statement in which they said that Diniz will be in command of the squad for the next year.

“Fernando Diniz will lead the Brazilian team for a year, and I’m sure he will do it with great competence, as he has always during his professional career,” said Ednaldo Rodrigues, the president of the CBF, in a video message. “I’m sure he will do it with great competence, as always during his professional career.”

“It is a dream, an honor, and a huge amount of pride to serve the national team,” Diniz added.

This year, the 49-year-old will serve as the head coach for all six of South America’s qualifying matches for the 2026 World Cup that are scheduled to take place. Among those matches are those played against Argentina and Uruguay.

In September, Brazil will kick off their qualifying campaign with a match against Bolivia at home, and then they will play Peru on the road.
