Ben Foster, a former goalkeeper for England, announced his re-retirement on Monday, just two months after agreeing to a one-year contract extension with League Two (fourth-tier) club Wrexham.
Foster, who made 12 appearances while at the club owned by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, was instrumental in getting the Welsh team back into the English Football League.
He came out of retirement to sign a short-term contract with Wrexham in March, and the following month, against Notts County, he saved a stoppage-time penalty to put Wrexham just one win away from automatic promotion from the National League.
In a statement, Foster stated, “The honest truth is that my performances this season have not been at the level I demand of myself, and I feel that now is the right time to retire.”
“When making my choice, I kept in mind not only what was best for me but also for the club, and making it now provides the club the best chance to weigh its choices before the (transfer) window closes.
I will always hold a particular place in my heart for Wrexham.
