Keemo Paul, an all-rounder, and Gudakesh Motie, a left-arm spinner, have been recalled by the West Indies for the World Cup qualifiers that will take place in Zimbabwe in June and July.

Due to the dismal results of the Caribbean squad, they have fallen to 10th position in the ICC’s ODI rankings. This means that they will have to battle against six other countries in order to earn one of the two open spots in the 2023 World Cup, which will begin in October in India.

For the first time since the one-day international series against India in Trinidad in July, the new ODI captain, Sai Hope, will have the ability to call on Paul and Motie. Former test opener and lead selector Desmond Haynes stated that he had great hopes for the two players who were returning.

“Paul is a three-dimensional player who can efficiently bowl the new ball, he’s lively in the outfield, and he can also score important runs. He has made a full recovery from his injury, and with the skills he possesses, we believe he has the potential to be a game-winner for us,” he stated.

“Motie was outstanding in the Test matches that were played in Zimbabwe earlier this year, when he took 19 wickets, and we think that circumstances will be quite similar for the qualifiers. We are confident that he will look forward to the opportunity to bowl in such circumstances once more,” he said.

The most notable player to be left off of the team is Guyanese batsman and Twenty20 standout Shimron Hetmyer. Hetmyer was cut from the World Cup squad the previous year due to a disagreement regarding flights that occurred just before the competition.

In the struggle to qualify for the main competition, West Indies’ primary competitors include Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Ireland, and the Netherlands.

In addition to the United States and India, the countries of Nepal, Oman, Scotland, and the United Arab Emirates are contending for a spot in the finals.

The West Indies will play three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) against the United Arab Emirates in order to prepare for their next match against Zimbabwe. This will be done without the participation of any players who are currently competing in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

World Cup qualifying lineup for the West Indies:

Rovman Powell served as the team’s vice captain, and Shai Hope, Rovman Powell, Shamarh Brooks, Yannic Cariah, Keacy Carty, Roston Chase, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Brandon King, Kyle Mayers, Gudakesh Motie, Keemo Paul, Nicholas Pooran, and Romario Shepherd were the team’s captain and vice captain, respectively.
