Kane Williamson has stated that he is taking his recovery from a right knee injury on a week-to-week basis, but he has not given up on the possibility of playing a role in New Zealand’s 50 overs World Cup campaign.

While playing for the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League, the elite top-order batsman tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), which required him to have surgery at the beginning of April.

Williamson said that he was making progress, but that getting the knee to fully recover was his top objective before returning to action in time for the World Cup, which will take place in India between October and November.

On Monday, he stated that for the time being, he is focusing on taking things “very much just trying to keep it week-to-week.”

“I haven’t been injured for such a prolonged period of time before, but from talking to other people who have, I’ve learned that the road to recovery is a bit of a long one, and if you look too far ahead, it may get a little bit intimidating.

“On the other hand, take things one week at a time and focus on crossing off those small markers and enjoying the little victories along the way.” But also being aware that the path won’t be entirely trouble-free and that there will be a few obstacles for you to overcome along the road.

Williamson’s batting propelled New Zealand to the final of the 2015 World Cup in Australia as well as the 2019 World Cup, which they ultimately lost to the hosts of the tournament, England, in a tense Super Over.

The 32-year-old batsman, who has 6,554 runs scored in ODIs and is the captain of New Zealand in both short formats of the game, stated that whatever training he was doing at the time was “elementary,” and he looked forward to getting back into the nets.

“Probably more for sanity and changing things up… just nice to mix up all the gym work and the physio work and rehab specific stuff to spend a bit of time with some of the other guys that are training,” he added. “It’s just nice to mix up all the gym work and the physio work and rehab specific stuff to spend a bit of time with some of the other guys that are training.”

“Without a doubt, I’m itching to get back into the nets,” he said.
