Vinicius Junior, a winger for Real Madrid, will be out for up to six weeks due to a hamstring injury, Spanish media reported on Monday.

Los Blancos issued a statement confirming the Brazilian’s injury but omitting to mention how long he would be out.

Vinicius left the game early in Friday’s 1-0 victory against Celta Vigo at Balaidos due to an injury, helping Madrid maintain first place in La Liga with a perfect record after three games.

The 23-year-old is scheduled to miss crucial La Liga matches against Real Sociedad and city rivals Atletico Madrid before the Champions League begins on September 19 because he could not be well enough.

“(Vinicius) wanted to continue, so I don’t think it was that serious, he tried, then it hurt a bit,” Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said on Friday after learning that Vinicius had suffered a more serious injury than first believed.

According to Spanish media, the striker might miss a total of five games—four in Spain’s top division and one abroad—during the six- to eight-week recovery period.
