After being ejected from Sunday’s match against Newcastle for unsportsmanlike conduct, Virgil van Dijk, a defender for Liverpool, has been charged with the offense.
After committing a foul on Alexander Isak of Newcastle during the first half of Liverpool’s match at St. James’ Park, which they won 2-1, Van Dijk was issued a red card by the referee.
The defensive center for the Netherlands was incensed by the ruling and at first he argued with the referee, John Brooks, rather than leaving the field of play.
Because Van Dijk is serving a suspension for the moment, he won’t be able to play in this weekend’s encounter against Aston Villa.
However, the suspension could be lengthened as a result of the complaint brought against him by the Football Association on Tuesday for using language that was threatening or disrespectful toward the referee.
An FA statement claimed that “Virgil van Dijk has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3.1 following Liverpool’s Premier League game against Newcastle United on Sunday, 27 August,” and that the charge stems from a violation of that rule.
It is asserted that the defender conducted themselves in an unprofessional manner and/or used abusive and/or disrespectful language towards a match official.
To react to the accusation, Van Dijk has until Friday of this week.
Jurgen Klopp, the manager of Liverpool, expressed his disapproval of the decision to replace one of his defenders shortly after the match against Newcastle.
“I do not believe that it warrants a red card. There is hardly any touch at all, which is unfortunate, but what can I say? “The decision has been made, and there is nothing I can do about it,” he stated.
“Would I blow the whistle during a scrimmage match? Absolutely not, but there are good arguments against my being a referee.
