Edwin van der Sar, a former goalkeeper for the Netherlands who is now an executive at Ajax, suffered a brain hemorrhage on Tuesday, and his club announced that while he was no longer in immediate danger of losing his life, he remained in critical care in the hospital.

The 52-year-old former player for Ajax in Amsterdam and then Manchester United was on vacation on an island in Croatia when he became unwell with an unknown illness.

Edwin is currently being treated in the intensive care unit, but his condition has remained unchanged. “He is not in any danger that would threaten his life,” Ajax stated in a statement, adding that the organization was providing the report on behalf of Annemarie Van der Sar, Van der Sar’s wife.

“Each and every time we go to see him, he’s very talkative. “We have no choice but to be patient and watch how he deals with this situation,” stated the man’s wife.

After what was the worst season in the past 14 years for the historic Dutch club, which finished third in the Eredivisie, Van der Sar made the announcement in May that he was resigning from his position as chief executive officer of Ajax.

Van der Sar, who has worn the Dutch national team jersey 130 times, played with Ajax from 1990 until 1999 and won the Champions League in 1995.

After playing for Juventus and Fulham, he moved on to Manchester United, where he won the European Cup in 2008 for the second time in his career.
