Tottenham Hotspur earned their first Premier League victory since October, with Brazilian striker Richarlison scoring twice in a 4-1 thrashing of a jaded-looking Newcastle United on Sunday.
Ange Postecoglou’s side made history by becoming the first Premier League team to lead 1-0 in five consecutive games without winning any of them in midweek.
But, after Destiny Udogie scored his first goal for the club after 26 minutes from skipper Son Heung-min’s cutback, they never looked back.
Richarlison was also fed by the exceptional Son to make it 2-0 before halftime, and he scored again on the hour as Tottenham ran riot against a Newcastle side that may have been distracted by next week’s crucial Champions League encounter with Milan.
Son concluded an illustrious performance by converting an 85th-minute penalty after being fouled by keeper Martin Dubravka.
Newcastle’s Joelinton scored a late consolation, but it was not enough to overshadow Tottenham’s victory, which moved them to fifth place with 30 points from 16 games, seven points behind leaders Liverpool in what is shaping up to be an exciting title race.
Following this week’s 3-0 loss to Everton, Eddie Howe’s Newcastle are seventh in the Premier League with 26 points.
