Nazmul Hassan Papon, the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), stated that the board still considers Tamim Iqbal to be their ODI captain and that the board will wait and hope for a change of heart from the opener, who had shocked the nation earlier on Thursday with the news that he was retiring from international cricket. Nazmul Hassan Papon said that the board still considers Tamim Iqbal to be their ODI captain.
“To us, Tamim is still the ODI captain,” Papon said as he briefed the media following a meeting of the BCB members at a hotel in the capital at midnight on Friday. The meeting was called to discuss a number of issues pertaining to cricket in Bangladesh.
Papon disclosed that he has communicated with Tamim by way of his brother Nafees Iqbal, but he has not yet received a response from the player who had captained Bangladesh. However, he stated that his deputy, Liton Das, will take command of the next two matches if Tamim stays true to his intention to quit.
“If for whatever reason the captain is unable to participate, then the vice captain assumes responsibility for leading the team. Therefore, this is what will take place. However, at this time we do not intend to name a captain who will remain with the squad permanently,” he stated.
