Sweden knock usa out of world cup on penalties0

After both sides finished the extra time on Sunday with a score of 0-0, the match went to penalties, where Sweden emerged victorious with a 5-4 victory against the United States, eliminating the reigning world champions from contention.

Lina Hurtig scored the game-winning penalty kick in a wild shootout, but the result had to be verified by video assistant referees (VAR) since American goalie Alyssa Naeher had blocked the ball on the goal line.

But instead of scoring the goal that would have given the United States their fifth consecutive world championship, Sophia Smith blasted the ball high over the crossbar.

Zecira Musovic, the goalie for Sweden, emerged as the victorious hero after keeping the Scandinavians in the game by making 11 saves before the shootout to deny the United States of America a victory.

The Swedes were often deprived of possession, and it was not until the 85th minute that they had a chance on goal. Substitute Sofia Jakobsson danced into the penalty area, but her shot was sent directly at the goalkeeper, Alyssa Naeher.

In the ninth minute of extra time, the talismanic Megan Rapinoe came off the bench to replace attacker Alex Morgan. Unfortunately for the Americans, she was unable to produce a game-winning opportunity for them.
