On Sunday, Liverpool won a thrilling 2-1 Premier League victory against Newcastle United thanks to two goals from substitute Darwin Nunez. The visitors overcame the loss of captain Virgil van Dijk to a straight red card in the first half.

The Uruguayan player entered the game in the 77th minute and immediately stole the show with two spectacular goals, his first Premier League goals since he scored against Leeds United in April.

The 24-year-old grabbed the spotlight from Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon, who seemed poised to break his team’s 13-game league winless streak against Juergen Klopp’s team. The youngster has reportedly dropped down the list of offensive prospects for Liverpool.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, who had already received a yellow card for pulling down Gordon, was fortunate to remain on the pitch. However, he gave Newcastle the first goal in the 25th minute when he mishandled the ball, enabling Gordon to race onto it and put the ball past Alisson Becker.

Just over two minutes later, Van Dijk was dismissed for fouling Alexander Isak on the outside of the box. Referee John Brooks gave him a straight red card, and the video assistant ref (VAR) supported his on-field decision.

After that, the home team took control as Alisson made a spectacular stop to divert Miguel Almiron’s thunderous volley against the crossbar in the 36th minute.

As Newcastle took advantage of having an additional man, Almiron missed another excellent chance five minutes into the second half and then struck the post in the 76th.

Nunez’s entry into the game changed everything, as he scored the equalizer after Sven Botman blundered, enabling Nunez to slam the ball past Nick Pope and into the far post.

Nunez scored again three minutes into stoppage time with a nearly similar second, sending the home supporters into a tailspin as the visitors, backed by coach Klopp, celebrated loudly on the field as the game seemed headed for a tie.

Nunez said, “I feel very happy for the team to be able to help them,” while Alisson, the goalkeeper, translated for him to Sky Sports.

“The squad performed exceptionally well when we lost a guy. We work so hard for these opportunities, and I’m pleased to have scored two goals to support the squad,” he said.
