Marcus Stoinis’ unbeaten 89 and Mohsin Khan’s heroics in the last over enabled the Lucknow Super Giants beat the Mumbai Indians by five runs on Tuesday during the Indian Premier League. This victory helped the Lucknow Super Giants increase their chances of making the play-offs.
In Lucknow, Mumbai fell short of their 178-run winning goal, and Mohsin, an up-and-coming left-arm fast who delivered figures of 1-26, defended 11 off the last over.
Tim David’s undefeated 32 off 19 balls gave Lucknow a scare, but he and fellow Australian Cameron Green were powerless in the face of Mohsin’s yorkers and discipline in the last over.
The bowling assault of Lucknow was bolstered by the contributions of impact player Yash Thakur and leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi, who both claimed two wickets.
In their pursuit of a top-four finish in the group stage to secure a spot in the play-offs, Lucknow leapfrogged five-time winners Mumbai and moved up one spot, moving into third position.
“The game is over and we just lost it. “We didn’t play well enough to win,” remarked Rohit Sharma, the captain of Mumbai’s cricket team. “There were times when we were unsuccessful. Despite the unfortunate circumstances, we must have a positive attitude.
Holders The Gujarat Titans have already secured their position and are guaranteed to finish in the top two. Seven of the ten clubs are now vying for the three play-off spots that are still available.
Stoinis laid the groundwork for Lucknow’s triumph by forming crucial partnerships, such as an 89-run stand with Lucknow’s skipper Krunal Pandya, who retired injured after scoring 49 runs for his team. This helped Lucknow reach 177-3.
At 35-3, the Australian all-rounder stepped in, and he and the left-handed Pandya began to rebuild the Lucknow innings on a ground that was not particularly easy to bat on.
Pandya’s cramping in his knock caused him to retire one run short of fifty, but Stoinis quickly shifted gears as he lifted his fifty with a six and laid into Chris Jordan in the 18th over, which resulted in 24 runs for the team.
He concluded the innings with a six and put on an undefeated stand of 60 runs with Nicholas Pooran, who hit eight runs, off of just 24 balls. Nicholas Pooran made eight runs.
“We have shown that we are a real team, there are no super stars, there are different people performing for us,” said Stoinis, who was awarded the man of the match award after the game.
In his team’s response, Ishan Kishan scored 59 runs and had an opening partnership of 90 runs with Rohit, who scored 37.
Bishnoi was responsible for sending the other two players back to the pavilion, while Thakur was the one who took the crucial wicket of Suryakumar Yadav. The score for Mumbai quickly fell to 145-5 after 17.4 overs.
David made an effort to pull the chase with Green as his companion, but Mohsin and Lucknow maintained their composure throughout the ordeal.
