South Africa rest Bavuma for India ODIs, T20Is

South africa rest bavuma for india odis, t20is0

South Africa rested batsman Temba Bavuma for this month’s home white-ball series against India, but he will skipper the side in the two-Test series, which begins on December 26.

Bavuma said that he was not fully fit when South Africa lost to eventual champions Australia by three wickets in the World Cup semi-finals.

He started the tournament, however he only averaged 18.12 over eight games, with a high score of 35.

Aiden Markram will captain both the Twenty20 and One Day International (ODI) teams against India, a role he may possibly continue to play in the future.

Quinton de Kock withdrew from one-day internationals after the end of the World Cup, but he is still available for T20s, though he will miss this series to play for the Melbourne Renegades in Australia’s domestic Big Bash League, which begins on Thursday.

Batters David Bedingham and Tristan Stubbs have been named to the Test squad for the first time, as has fast bowler Nandre Burger, who has been named to all three formats.

While wicketkeeper-batter Kyle Verreynne and all-rounder Wiaan Mulder have been recalled for the test and ODI series, star fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has been rested from the short overs games in order to play domestic four-day cricket in preparation for the Test matches.

For the same reason, Gerald Coetzee, Lungi Ngidi, and Marco Jansen will not participate in the ODIs.

“We have a near-full-strength (Test) squad to pick from, and that in itself is a real boost for us,” Test coach Shukri Conrad said in a statement released by Cricket South Africa.

“It is the start of a new ICC World Test Championship cycle and that itself is a huge incentive for everyone.”

From December 10 to 14, India will play three T20 matches in Durban, Gqeberha (previously Port Elizabeth), and Johannesburg. They will then switch formats for three one-day internationals (ODIs) between December 17 and 21, which will be played in the latter two venues as well as Paarl.

The first Test will begin on December 26 in Pretoria, with the second on January 3 in Cape Town at Newlands.
