On the same day that Tottenham’s all-time leading scorer Harry Kane signed with Bayern Munich, the club announced that Son Heung-min will replace Kane as the team’s captain.
Hugo Lloris has been the captain of the Spurs since 2015, however it is unclear whether or not the French goalkeeper will continue to play for the club.
If Kane had stayed in north London rather than travelling to Germany in search of his first piece of hardware in his career, he would have been expected to take over as the leader of the team.
New contract inking James Maddison and Cristian Romero, an Argentine center back, have been given the role of vice captain for the team.
Son, who has scored 145 goals since joining the club in 2015, stated that it is “such a big honor to captain this huge club.” Son has been the team’s captain since 2017.
“It came as such a shock, and it was a very gratifying moment for me. I have already conveyed to the players the need of acting as though they are all captains, both on and off the field.
“It’s a new season, and a fresh start, and I will give everything I have for this shirt and this armband.”
Ange Postecoglou, the manager of Tottenham, praised Son for his leadership abilities, noting that Son previously served as captain of South Korea.
“Sonny possesses excellent leadership characteristics, both on and off the field, and would be an excellent candidate to take over the captaincy of our team.
Everyone in the locker room acknowledges that he is a player of the highest caliber in the world, and they all hold him in the highest regard.
“He is not limited to any one group within the squad. That is not only due to the fact that he is well-liked; it is also due to the fact that he has accomplished a lot in the game, both here and as the captain of South Korea.
When Spurs play their first game of the new Premier League season on Sunday away at Brentford, they will be the first team in the league to do it without Kane.
