Suryakumar Yadav of the Mumbai Indians plays a shot on May 9, 2023, during an Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 cricket match between the Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
On Tuesday, Mumbai Indians jumped from ninth to third place in the IPL standings after defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore by six wickets. Suryakumar Yadav hit 83 runs off 35 balls to lead the victory for Mumbai Indians.
At Wankhede Stadium, with Mumbai needing 200 to win, Suryakumar and Nehal Wadhera put on a blistering stand of 140, during which Nehal Wadhera scored an unbeaten 52, and Mumbai cruised to victory with 21 balls to spare.
A revival of Mumbai’s flagging season was sparked by the team’s sixth victory in 11 matches. The five-time defending champions are aiming for a top-four finish to earn a spot in the play-offs.
After the first innings was lighted up by the captain Faf du Plessis (65) and Glenn Maxwell (68), Suryakumar’s blitz, which was studded with six sixes, was his IPL best and made Bangalore’s total of 199-6 appear like a minor score.
“He is definitely one of the best, isn’t he?” Regarding Suryakumar, Du Plessis, who is now in first place on the tournament’s batting table with 576 runs, had this to say. “Once he gets rolling, he becomes very challenging to bowl to. There are so many different paths that you just can’t stop him. He is currently regarded as “one of the game’s greats.”
“Much needed from the team’s point of view,” said Suryakumar, who got off to a rough start in the season before finding his form later on. I cannot express how delighted I am to have won such a big game at home. Ishan Kishan, Mumbai’s opener, scored a quick-fire 42, but the team’s score was brought down to 52-2 when Rohit Sharma, the captain, was out for seven, extending his batting slump.
On the other hand, Suryakumar and Wadhera, who plays left-handed, quickly brought the pursuit back to life and engaged the adversary in combat. Once everything were in order, Suryakumar sprang into life, reaching his fifty off of just twenty-six balls and maintaining the charge with a series of sixes and fours.
Wadhera hit the winning six to bring up his fifty, despite the fact that Suryakumar had fallen when his side still needed eight more runs to win and Tim David had been run out without scoring.
Earlier, the in-form Du Plessis dodged a dropped catch on nought on his way to registering his sixth fifty of the season. After that, he struck back and scored a hundred. In his first two overs, England’s Chris Jordan allowed 31 runs to be scored, only hours after Mumbai announced that he would be playing in place of the injured Jofra Archer. Archer had flown back to England to “focus on his rehabilitation” after suffering an injury while playing for Mumbai.
Maxwell welcomed Jordan with two sixes in his first over, but the fast bowler regained control in his last two and took the wicket of Dinesh Karthik, who was 30 at the time. Jason Behrendorff, a left-arm fast for Australia, got things going early by taking three wickets, including the one of Virat Kohli for one run, and he finished with statistics of 3-36.
During their fourth century partnership of the season, Du Plessis and Maxwell united to punish the Mumbai attack by smashing seven sixes between the two of them. This occurred when the score was 16-2. Following their third loss in a row and fourth loss overall, Bangalore fell to seventh place in the rankings.
