Lionel Scaloni will remain Argentina’s coach at least until the conclusion of this summer’s Copa America, in which the team will defend its title, according to local media on Monday.
The announcement comes after Argentina FA (AFA) President Claudio Tapia met with Scaloni to discuss the national team’s forthcoming friendly in China ahead of the continental championship in the United States from June 20 to July 14.
Reuters has reached out to the AFA for comment.
“Lionel Scaloni will remain in the Argentina national team and will coach through to the Copa America,” Gaston Edul, an Argentine sports writer for TyCSports, claimed on social media. “Surely, in the next few days, an official voice will confirm it.”
Scaloni questioned his future in the role after Argentina defeated Brazil in South American World Cup qualifiers in November, saying: “It’s complicated to keep going, and it’s complicated to keep winning.”
The 45-year-old took over as coach in 2018 and guided Argentina to their first major trophy since the 1986 World Cup, the Copa America victory in 2021, and their third world title the following year in Qatar.
