Marcel Sabitzer, a midfielder for Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich, has signed a four-year contract with Borussia Dortmund.

The Austrian vice captain, who is now 29, has passed a physical and signed a deal that runs until June 2027, according to the team’s press release.

Sabitzer, whose contract is said to be around 19 million euros ($21m), remarked, “I can’t wait to finally join the team and wear the BVB jersey.”

My discussions with Borussia Dortmund’s management were really productive, and they demonstrated the club’s commitment to long-term success.

“I’d like to do what I can to help BVB accomplish their goals and give the fans another reason to celebrate soon,” he said.

Starting his career with Admira Wacker in Austria and then spending a year with Rapid Vienna, Sabitzer moved to RB Leipzig of Germany’s Bundesliga in 2014. He spent 2020-21 on loan at Salzburg before signing with Bayern Munich.

He has appeared in 32 Champions League games and 185 Bundesliga contests. For Austria, he has 71 caps.

In February of last season, the Bavarian club loaned him to Manchester United of the English Premier League, where he played 18 matches in all competitions until suffering an injury in May.

In the 2016–17 Bundesliga season, Dortmund finished second behind Bayern on goal differential following a 2-2 home draw with Mainz on the last day of the season.
