Erik ten Hag, the manager of Manchester United, stated that Alejandro Garnacho’s incredible goal on Sunday might be the season’s best goal. However, he also stated that it is too early to compare his young player to players like Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The 19-year-old netted a spectacular overhead kick in the third minute to give United a 3-0 victory over Everton at Goodison Park. He immediately brought comparisons to former United striker Rooney as he sprang to meet Diogo Dalot’s cross with an incredible scissor kick into the top right corner.
Ten Hag told reporters, “The season, there are still many games to play, but probably already the goal of the season.” “It was incredible.”
The teenager from Argentina claimed that even he was surprised by his own goal.
“I didn’t see how I scored, I just listened to the crowd and said ‘Oh my god,'” Garnacho stated to NBC. “One of the best goals I’ve scored, I’m very happy.”
The goal was reminiscent of past United strikers Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo, especially Rooney’s incredible bicycle kick goal in the 2011 Manchester Derby.
Former United captain Gary Neville remarked, “I can’t believe it,” during the Sky Sports broadcast. “I don’t think I’ve ever been in a stadium where I’ve seen an overhead kick as good as that – and I was there on the day that Rooney scored his in the Manchester Derby.”
Ten Hag, though, felt uneasy drawing such a sharp comparison between Garnacho and two of the club’s most prominent players of late.
“Don’t compare,” remarked the manager, who was not present on the touchline due to a one-game suspension on Sunday.
“It doesn’t seem right to me. They’re all unique individuals, but Garnacho needs to put in a lot of effort if he wants to follow that path. It also needs to be done consistently. And he isn’t yet.
Yet he undoubtedly have a great deal of potential for incredible things. This is not something we have seen before. However, it’s difficult to score 20, 25 goals in the Premier League if you want to be a player like Ronaldo or Wayne Rooney. But he does have potential.”
The Goodison Park crowd fell silent, except for the travelling United supporters who broke into raucous renditions of “Viva Garnacho.”
Everton manager Sean Dyche expressed amazement at what he referred to as a “lifetime goal.”
