Marcus Rashford projected on Thursday that he may score 40 goals for Manchester United this season. His confidence was boosted by the news that Wayne Rooney is rooting for him to beat his record for most goals scored for the club.
Rooney now holds the record for most goals scored at Old Trafford with 253, but Rashford, who is just 25 years old and recently signed a new deal for a period of five years, seems to be in an excellent position to one day surpass that total.
The 30 goals he scored during the previous season brought his career total to 123.
“I’m all about scoring goals and trying to make assists, but you never know what’s going to happen,” he said. When questioned about Rooney’s place in United’s all-time record book, Rashford responded by saying, “There’s definitely a chance that it can happen.”
“I really had a conversation with Wayne about it, and he wants me to carry it through. He told me that since I’ve spent most of my life at the club, it would be beneficial for me to participate. I’m crossing my fingers that I’ll get the chance to work on making it happen.
Rashford expressed his confidence that he would be able to score 40 goals in the next season during a chat with Gary Neville, a former defender for Manchester United. The conversation took place on Neville’s Overlap program.
“Before the start of the previous season, I always said let’s get to 20, which is a good benchmark for a winger,” he continued.
“But this season, I turned 30, so we need to try to push it now and go above and beyond,” he said.
“Towards the end of the season, I was battling a few ailments, and I maybe wasn’t quite at it – that’s when the goals began to dry up a little bit,” he said. “It was probably because I wasn’t quite at it.
If I can maintain that aspect of it under control, I believe that I will be able to continue and either attain 35 or 40.”
