As he continues to heal from a severe brain injury, Sergio Rico, the goalkeeper for Paris Saint-Germain, has been released from the hospital’s critical care unit, according to a report released on Wednesday.
The 29-year-old man will continue to receive medical care at the Virgen del Rocio hospital in Seville, where he was taken on May 28 after an accident at a local event that included a horse.
“Sergio Rico has been discharged from the Intensive Care Unit…where he was under close surveillance and monitoring during the five weeks he has been cared for by the Intensive Care team, along with other specialists,” the hospital stated in a report that was provided to the media. “Sergio Rico was under close surveillance and monitoring during the five weeks he has been cared for by the Intensive Care team, along with other specialists.”
“As of today, he has been admitted to the ward,” the doctor said, “where he will continue to receive medical and nursing care from another team of specialists at the hospital.”
AFP was informed by medical sources last week that Rico had regained consciousness and was able to communicate after having been in a coma.
Following a successful loan stint with Paris Saint-Germain, the goalkeeper made the move to join the club permanently in 2020. He had previously won the Europa League twice with his hometown club Sevilla.
