After losing the first two One-Day Internationals (ODIs) at Chattogram’s Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury, Bangladesh were defeated by Afghanistan in the One-Day International series for the first time. The most pressing concern going into the third One-Day International for Bangladesh was how their batting lineup would fare against the spin bowling attack of Afghanistan.
Nic Pothas, an assistant coach for the Bangladesh cricket team, stated that not only the batters from Bangladesh but batters from all other teams struggle against them. This statement is a far cry from acknowledging the development that the Bangladesh batting unit has been able to accomplish.
Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, both spin bowlers for Afghanistan, had a field day against Bangladesh hitters, who had difficulty reading the mystery spinners bowled by Afghanistan. The ICC One-Day International rankings currently have Afghanistan in ninth place overall.
Their previous One-Day International (ODI) series victories were against Scotland, Ireland, Zimbabwe, and the Netherlands, amongst other teams. Pothas stated that going up against their mysterious spinners was an enjoyable test of one’s mettle.
“Even though they are rated lower than us, two of those spinners are currently ranked in the top three spinners in the entire world. “We are approaching it with a very optimistic and hopeful mindset,” he remarked.
Even if Tigers batsmen were having trouble, Pothas wanted to make it clear at the press conference today that Bangladesh batters were not the only ones having trouble reading spinners out of the hand. He said this to stress that Bangladesh batters were not the only ones experiencing trouble.
“I do not believe that it is a question of whether or not we had difficulty selecting them. It all boils down to how difficult it is for the world to choose between them. If you look at where they are rated in the world, you can see that everyone in the globe has a hard time picking them. While I was at Middlesex, Mujeeb was at my side. Even after we had a conversation about our roles as wicketkeepers, I had trouble recognizing him from behind.
Is it possible for everyone to choose Shane Warne or Muralitharan? Because of this, they are unrivaled anywhere else in the world. Because of this, each and every tournament in the world awards a significant sum of money for the mystery spin. The question that has to be answered is, “What are we going to do about it, and how is it going to make us better?” he stated.
On the other hand, it was not really apparent what they intended to do about it. Pothas have the feeling that they are progressing.
There is always going to be growth, but when you are put under stress, you will always go back to your default behavior. These things take time, and while I realize that you guys want it to happen as fast as possible, I can assure you that it will not happen that quickly. He continued by saying, “That’s not how the world works.”
