Newcastle United defeated Manchester United 1-0 on Saturday, due to Anthony Gordon’s second-half winner.
Victory moves Eddie Howe’s men over Manchester United into fifth place in the Premier League rankings, and it was the least the home side deserved after a dominant performance that should have resulted in more goals.
Gordon’s lone goal came on 55 minutes, when he tapped in Kieran Trippier’s cross.
Newcastle’s three points came at a cost, however, as goalkeeper Nick Pope hobbled out late in the game, adding to their injury difficulties.
The Magpies were missing 11 first-team players but were completely dominant for the first hour against a United side that has yet to beat a team in the top nine of the Premier League table this season.
Andre Onana was in the spotlight after Erik ten Hag’s men were held to a 3-3 draw against Galatasaray in midweek, which might be deadly to their prospects of progressing in the Champions League.
However, the Cameroonian made a crucial early stop to prevent Miguel Almiron from finding the far corner.
Newcastle was also disappointed in the Champions League in midweek, when a contentious stoppage-time penalty cost them a famous victory over Paris Saint-Germain.
Due to a shortage of options, Howe was compelled to choose the same lineup for the third time in a row, with 17-year-old Lewis Miley starting in midfield.
The home side, however, showed no signs of exhaustion as they were unable to cope with Newcastle’s enthusiasm on and off the ball.
The outstanding Harry Maguire deflected Alexander Isak’s attempt millimetres wide.
Newcastle were unlucky not to make their dominance count before halftime when Trippier’s free-kick rebounded back off the underside of the bar.
However, the deadlock was ultimately broken when Trippier was passed in down the right and picked up Gordon at the far post to score his sixth goal of the season.
Only after falling behind did Ten Hag respond, as the ineffective Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial were substituted by Rasmus Hojlund and Antony.
Those alterations, however, evoked no reaction from the visitors, as United fell to their sixth Premier League defeat of the season.
United came closest to equalising when Fabian Schar saved Sergio Reguilon’s goalbound effort.
However, Newcastle suffered a setback as custodian Pope jolted his shoulder in an attempt to save the Spaniard’s shot.
United finally showed some urgency in the last moments, plus nine minutes of added time due to Pope’s injury, and had the ball in the net.
Maguire, on the other hand, was obviously offside when he deflected in Antony’s shot, and Newcastle held on to get within two points of the top four.
